Vindolanda is a stunningly good book, a story simply wonderfully told, from a new (to me) author and a much-needed (again, maybe, for me) new voice in Roman period Historical Fiction. A hugely impressive novel, made even more impressive by the fact that the good Mr Goldsworthy's day job, is that of a non-fiction All Things Roman Author.4/5.

Inhabitants of Vindolanda are brought to life and play central roles in the plot. I enjoyed the blend of fact and the obvious wealth of knowledge demonstrated by the author and the story he weaves around these Roman citizens.

Vindolanda book is the first adventure for Titus Flavius Ferox, centurion of Legio II Augusta and a man torn between two worlds. His grandfather was one of the great chiefs and war leaders of the Silures, the tribe living in what is now South Wales.

For over twenty years he fought the Romans, but in the end he and the rest of his people were beaten down and became subjects of the empire. The author, Adrian Goldsworthy, is a scholar of Roman history. In ``Vindolanda'' he writes a masterful novel solidly based on history and exciting fiction.

Without doubt the best historic fiction I've read in very long time. As a suggestion, I would recommend that one read the author's notes at the end of the book. Buy Vindolanda by Adrian Goldsworthy (ISBN: ) from Amazon's Book Store.

The result is an unparalleled insight into the spirit of the day-today life on the north-west edge of the Empire in the three decades before Hadrian.

The Vindolanda tablets give us wonderful glimpses of life in the area at the time of the stories. However, our evidence for what went on during Trajan's reign in Roman Britain as a whole, let alone the north, consists of a few vague fragments.

The Vindolanda tablets (also known as Vindolanda Letters) are thin pieces of wood about the size of a modern postcard, which were used as writing paper for the Roman soldiers garrisoned at the fort of Vindolanda between AD 85 and Such tablets have been found at other Roman sites, including nearby Carlisle, but not in as much abundance.
